About In-School Touring

With its music, theatrics, spectacle and humor, opera has everything kids love. That is why year after year, students who experience Virginia Opera’s In-School performances beg for more. This season Virginia Opera brings a new and exciting adventure, in addition to some of our beloved favorites, allowing your school to host a performance of timeless classics. (Click here for a list of performance titles!)

We have a spectacular new program in store for you during 2008-2009: The Adventures of Pinocchio's Sister, based on the character by Carlo Collodi. Returning this season is Tales from the Brothers Grimm, three classic Grimm Brother’s tales woven into one humorous offering that features Doctor Know-it-all, Rumpelstiltskin, and Cat & Mouse. Adding to the excitement is the return of History Alive!, an entertaining musical telling of Virginia and American history that is in high demand following its premiere two years ago.

We are also offering a few new programs for schools and organizations that like to partner with each other, such as our Community Programs and our Kids-In-Mass program. We also have special offerings for middle schools and high schools so don’t forget to check out our Encore, Master Classes and Opera & Broadway programs.

Last year, our professional casts sang and danced their way into the hearts of more than 150,000 elementary, middle and high school students, as well as community groups across Virginia. Virginia Opera continually offers audiences a chance to see performances unlike any they have ever experienced – don’t let your students miss this unique opportunity. Following each performance, we provide an innovative question and answer period featuring singers sharing information and interacting with students in an up-close and personal manner.

Free Study Guides

Each school is provided with a free study guide to help prepare for the program. This valuable tool includes several age-appropriate student worksheets that assist teachers in tying the arts into your school's curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning. Following each performance, we provide an innovative question and answer period featuring singers sharing information and interacting with students in an up-close and personal manner. Study guides may also be downloaded here at vaopera.org/studyguides.

Tales from the Brothers Grimm
January 2009 - February 2009
Appropriate for Grades K-5

This 45-minute production features three of the lighter stories from the galaxy of Grimm’s fairy tales, providing a humorous and fast-paced introduction to opera for younger children.  In Dr. Know-It-All, a would-be doctor is advised that medical training is over-rated and all he needs to open his practice are doctor’s clothes and a stethoscope.  When a truly sick patient arrives, both "doctor" and patient end up learning some important lessons about nutrition and exercise.  Rumplestiltskin’s New Adventure depicts the famous troll as he’s preparing for an encounter with yet another maiden needing his help.  This time, he’s determined to keep his name a secret!  The show concludes with Cat and Mouse Together.  These two natural enemies seem to have found the secret to living together.

Opera Terms to Know

Opus

A single work or composition, from the Latin; the plural form of "opus" is "opera" and it was that term that the Camerata (see above) adopted since their new stage presentations combined the musical work, the dramatic work and the staging work--thus making "works."
